Mystery Cipher Exclusive Interview

Mystery Cipher, an up and coming rapper from Boston has worked with rappers such as Cassidy, Future, Freck Billionaire, and many other established artists. Being that he is only a freshman in college he is fairly successful for his age. Ive known Mystery Cipher for about a year now and we've been talking about doing an interview for some time now and finally got around to it. So here is an inside look at one of Boston's most talented emcee's.

1. What got you interested in Music ?

Honestly, I’ve just been intrigued by music since a young child. Growing up I was always listening to music regardless of the genre. Around age 6-7 I can remember listening to Hip Hop music and trying to write rhymes in a notebook. It’s just a passion I’ve had for as long as I can remember.

2. What advice would you give to people who are new or not as established as you are in the industry?

Grind. I’m a LONG way from where I wish to be, but I’m always motivated to keep working because I know I can reach my goals. I’ve come into contact with a lot of people who respect my grind and hustle because they see the work I put in day in and day out. There is never a moment when I am not thinking about how I can improve my work. To those who are also coming up with me I advise you to outwork those who may often be more talented than you. You gotta grind 25/8 just to stay ahead of those working 24/7.

3. Top 3 favorite artists and why?

(All Time) (No Order)
  1. Cassidy - Cassidy is one of the most influential artists in my career. He is the reason why I came into this game. I would remember listening to Cassidy and being able to rewind verses to hear new things you would not notice the first time you may have listened to his verse. In my opinion he’s one of the best punchline artists to ever pick up a microphone hands down.

  1. Big L - Although I may not have been listening to him when he was actually revolutionizing the game live I have learned a lot from studying and listening to everything Big L put out. Big L is the person who I consider to be the father of today’s punchline style. It still puzzles me how people argue Big & Tupac, but can leave Big L out of this conversation. Obviously he never got far enough in his career to receive enough attention as Big or Pac, but he revolutionized wordplay and punchlines and could go bar for bar with either of those two.

  1. Fabolous - Can you tell I like punchlines yet? Fab has just always been a consistent artist who can go on anything and do what he does best, kill it. Fab is one of my favorite artists just because he is a perfect example of an artist who started back when the Hip Hop Industry was about the bars, and was able to cleanly adapt with today’s music while still spitting crazy punches and staying relevant.

4. What experience in your career was a game changer for you and why?

Being able to work with Cassidy & Freck Billionaire. As I stated above Cassidy has been a long time influence to me, and when he reached out to me on twitter saying he wanted to see what I could do on that 3rd verse on “Dumb Out” I was just in shock. Freck Billionaire because he is considered Fab’s artist, and has some of the craziest lines I have ever heard. That man is the Shakespeare of bars. Also, my recent performance with Ab-Soul. That was just an amazing experience I had, These experiences just showed me that I’ve came a LONG way from recording on a webcam microphone. It’s just been more motivation to keep working showing me what is possible!

5. Favorite project that you have ever worked on?

My favorite project has to be my latest project “Da Capo: Only The Beginning” with Studbeats and Big Tunez The DJ. Stud & I just had a lot of fun making this project. I took a step back from everything when I was working on this I changed every routine I originally had. I honestly did not write any song on this project I just went into the booth and recorded how I felt at that particular moment. Every song on that project was something I had fun with, which many artist cannot say when they are working on a project. Most artist become stressed when working on a project so I decided to tell myself I wouldn’t stress it, but just have fun with it. Looking back on it I think it was a great project, and I received a lot of great reviews on it! I had a great time working on that!
6. Is this just a temporary job or do you see yourself doing this long-term?

I see myself doing this for awhile. I’ve been working too hard and put too much money into this career to just quit on it one day.

7. What else do you do besides Rap?

Nothing. No, but really I’m actually a full time college student. Obviously that takes a lot of time out of my music schedule, but the minute I get out of classes it’s all music business. I’ve actually made a lot of connects throughout my university with artists, producers, and people who know other people in the music industry so it has helped me in some ways.

8. Where do you see yourself in the industry in 5 years?

Hopefully sipping ciroc with Diddy. Hahaha I just hope in 5 years I’m doing what I love to do and getting paid for it. I see myself touring the world with Stud & Big Tunez as we create the next major movement in the music industry.

9. What college/university do you attend, and what was your motivation for choosing that school?

I attend Suffolk University in Boston, MA. I chose this school because I wanted to stay in the Boston area and this seemed like the right fit. It wasn’t too big or too small just a perfect amount of students. I’m glad I chose this school so far because as I previously said I’ve made a lot of connections, and hopefully will continue to make more!

How did you and Stud Beats meet?

Maaaan Stud & I been friends WAY before the music. We grew up together, we went to the same school from 5-8th grade, and now we also go to college together. Knowing each other for so long when we transferred it to music we just had a crazy producer/artist chemistry. I think a lot of other producers who submit beats to me are beginning to get mad at Stud, and I think other upcoming artists who are dying to work with Stud are beginning to get mad at me ahahah. We just have a vibe that works crazy together.

11. Coolest Famous Rapper/Artist that you have have had a conversation with? and why?

French Montana. I met French at the airport last summer and he seemed like such a chill dude. He was with all his Coke Boy members and we had a conversation he was just a real down to earth artist. He let me spit for his A&R and they took down my contact info so it was just a real memorable time out of nowhere. He def gets my respect.

12. What is the hardest thing for you as an Artist? and why?

The hardest thing has been marketing my music. I have a good sized supporting base, but I want to continue to expand but it’s a lot more work than it seems. I’m not one who wants to spam everyone on twitter/facebook so I take other approaches. I’ve been getting into marketing techniques a lot more and will continue to do so until my supporter base is where I want it to be (I’ll probably never be fine though it can always be growing LOL).

13. Favorite Food?

Cheese Pizza Well Done. My boys get sick at how every time they wanna order something or go out to eat before a session I want pizza. I can easily eat pizza everyday for a few weeks straight. Lock me in the studio with pizza, bombay, and a bunch of beats from Stud and it’s over. Hahaha

14. Craziest thing to happen to you while Performing?

Daaaaamn see I didn’t want to answer this hahaa. During the “I Love College Tour” Big Tunez was DJing this event that brought 1,600+ college students from around New England together for one huge show. While on stage Stud & I were throwing out chains and hats provided to us by  one of my sponsors HipHopBling.com (Check them out DOPE!) and some girl was going crazy in the corner of the stage for a chain. I threw her a chain she moved out of the way and it cracked the girl behind her...I just walked away like nothing happened...The girl was fine but pissed and ended up throwing the chain back up onto stage and someone else on stage threw it back out.

15. Most memorable experience

My most recent performance with TDE artist Ab-Soul. It was my first real sold out performance, and I thought it was okay, but could absolutely be improved. It was more of a memorable learning experience.

16. What Rapper do you aspire to be like?

I don’t want to be like anyone else. I want to inspire and motivate the next group of upcoming artists. I want to show people with a dream that as unlikely as it may seem it’s possible.
