Mike Squires Exclusive Interview

Mike Squires on the right (Red and Black Flannel)

Mike Squires owner/founder of Squires Entertainment is arguably one of the best videographers in the New England region. His ability to create amazing and mind blowing visuals is untouched by anyone else in the underground music scene. He’s worked with YG, Kid Ink, Mike Stud, Chris Webby, Danimal Lector, Soul Khan, Tyga, Fabolous, Action Brodson, ect. This is impressive for any videographer to have accomplished, but the fact that he is only entering his sophomore year in college is insane. Because of his many talents we asked Mike if he would be interested in an interview and he accepted; so now you can find out more about one of the most talented videographers in the New England area.

Example of Some of Mikes Work:

1. What got you interested in film?

I have always been interested in film since I was young. I shot my first video for a school project in middle school with my long time friend Nick. People loved the video, everyone was talking about it around school, it was kind of like our 15 minutes of fame, haha. But long story short, we continued to put out comedy skits throughout high school, even though we went to different schools. We must have put together almost 100 videos once everything was all said and done. But you may be wondering, well how’d you end up doing music videos if you did comedy skits. In high school I had a friend of mine who is an aspiring rapper. He basically asked if I ever shot a music video before. Next thing you know, I’m on a train to time square to shoot my first video under Squires Entertainment.

2. What advice would you give to people who are new or not as established as you are in the industry?

Don’t give up, if you really want to accomplish something, keep at it and I guarantee your hard work will pay off! Also, stay true to yourself; it’s always good to remember your roots and where you came from.

3. Top 3 favorite artists and why?

I really don’t have favorite artists; I pretty much listen to everything. As far as creativity goes, I am a huge fan of Kanye West. I know there was a lot of controversy of Yeezus, but honestly, I think that album was ahead of its time and the first of it’s kind. Chiddy Bang has also had a huge influence on me growing up. Their style really got me into hip-hop because of the sampling they did. Kids by MGMT use to be my favorite song and when I heard how Xaphoon flipped it into Opposite of Adults, I was mind blown haha.

4. What experience in your career was a game changer for you and why?

This is a tough one. I really think it’s been a gradual change from multiple experiences rather than just one.
5. Favorite project that you have ever worked on?

I honestly can’t pick one haha. I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing people and everyone brings something unique to the table.

6. Is this just a temporary job or do you see yourself doing this long-term?

I am blessed to say that I am doing this full time now! I’m very passionate when it comes to my videos so I would love to do this long term. If things keep up the way they are now, I can’t see why I couldn’t do this for the rest of my life. You don’t know how appreciative I am of the fact that I am able to maintain a good paying job out of something I love.
7. What else do you do besides Video?

Haha, I was reflecting on that question the other day. Honestly, not much. I also have been producing beats for a couple artists I have working with. For the most part, my time is spent filming, editing, producing and networking. I’m very serious when it comes down to my business!
8. Where do you see yourself in the industry in 5 years?

This is the 3rd time someone has asked me a question similar to this, this week. There is no possibly way I could answer this though, I barely know where I’m going to be tomorrow, let alone 5 years from now! Hopefully, still doing film though!
10. What do you do for Tuxedo Junction?

Ever since they re-opened I have been the resident videographer! Shout out to Ian Bick, he’s been putting on some amazing shows! Both GTA and Chris Webby were awesome shows and you can check out the recap videos online! Tuxedo has some awesome shows coming up and If you live in the area I highly recommend attending to their future events!!!!

11. Coolest Famous Rapper/Artist that you have had a conversation with? and why?

I’ve met a good amount of famous for someone in my position but I’m going to have to give the coolest rapper/artist award to Kid Ink. Honestly, he’s just a down to earth dude. He’s super nice and humble. He’s got a good team behind him. He’s also one of the only artists I have filmed multiple times, so him and his team recognize me and are pretty cool when it comes down to filming restrictions.

12. What is the hardest thing for you as a Videographer? and why?

Time Management, this summer has been awesome because I have been able to shoot videos as a full time job, but sometimes I take on a little more than I can handle. I always like a challenge, but falling behind on editing is the worst.
13. Favorite Food?

Ribs… I think
14. Craziest thing to happen to you while on the job?

Here’s a list
·      Been yelled at by drunk hockey players
·      I have been stopped by police 20+ times throughout my career
·      Been attacked by a swarm of bugs
·      Had to sneak into a college campus in someone’s trunk
·      Backed into a car
·      Worked on lighting in a sex dungeon
·      Camera broke
·      Been covered in champagne
·      Filmed with a severed pigs head
Nothing too crazy yet, but that’s all I could think of off the top of my head

15. Most memorable experience

I would have to say my Winner video with P.MO, video is just over 2 years old and I still have people hitting me up like “dude, the video you did with the truck is awesome” haha!

16. What videographer do you aspire to be like?

I just aspire to be a better version of myself. I’m always looking for ways to better my craft. I’d rather be the first Mike Squires than the next Hype Williams.
